Report:
We met the students at school at 9am. We went over the plan for the day and talked about "leave no trace" principles. We talked about all of the gear that would be needed to stay warm and dry in the snow and then packed in the vans and headed to the pass. There was a little bit of slush on the roads right at the top of the pass and along the road to Gold Creek, but it was manageable. While the day started off with drizzle, it stopped by the time we were putting on snowshoes and the trailhead and there was even a little bit of sun at points during the day! We were a group of 4th and 5th graders, so it took about 45 minutes to get to Gold Creek. We set up and ate lunch and then played in the snow for a bit. We then walked over to a hilly area and created a little sled path where we had fun sledding for another hour or so. We headed back to the vans where we warmed up on hot chocolate before driving back to school. There was actually a lot of snow at Gold Creek and snowshoes were actually very helpful to keep from post-holing.
