Plan:
Fun Saturday to start the summer. We will drive north on I-5 to Deception Pass State Park near Anacortes where we will do an easy short hike in the morning. After lunch we will go for a three-hour beginner sea kayak trip around Fidalgo Island with kayak guides from the Anacortes Kayak Tours: https://www.anacorteskayaktours.com/kayaking-day-trips/half-day-anacortes/
Report:
For their end of the school year trip we took middle school students from South Shore School on a sea kayaking trip. Although it was a rainy day in Seattle, we got lucky with a weather window and enjoyed blue skies at Deception Pass and while kayaking in the waters off of Anacortes.

We did not have a lot of time, but we were able to walk across the bridge. Always worth a stop, the views from the Deception Pass bridge are really good. The tide was changing and the water was flowing so fast through Deception Pass it looked like a swiftly flowing river.

It is a long drive to Anacortes from Seattle, approximately 1.5 hours without traffic. We did not have as much time as we would have liked at Deception Pass because we had to meet our kayak guides at noon. If we had a little more time there we would have walked down to the beach.

After Deception Pass we drove up to Anacortes' Skyline Marina where we met our guides from Anacortes Kayak Tours. From the marina we paddled over to Burrows Island. We spent a couple hours on the water and paddled just under 5 miles.

We saw a lot of sea life while kayaking. Seals popped up out of the water to watch us go by. We even saw a small pod of porpoises that were swimming back and forth near us, getting as close as 20 feet away from our kayaks. We found out later that we just missed seeing Orcas by a couple hours. That morning a pod of Orca whales had passed through the same area we kayaked in the afternoon.

South Shore is a K-8 school located in Seattle's Rainier Beach neighborhood. Their school mascot is the "Sea Dragons", so it is fitting that we got them out on a sea kayaking trip.
Suggestions:
Normally to park at Deception Pass you would need a Discover Pass, but the 2nd Saturday in June is National Get Outdoors Day. In Washington State it is observed as one of the State Park free days so we did not have to pay.

An afternoon kayaking is the limit for middle school kids who have never paddled before. We did the 3 hour tour, which was the right amount of time. By the time we were geared up and started paddling out of the marina we only had 2 hours on the water. They had fun, by the end about half the kids were starting to complain, so that is a good indicator that any longer would be too long.
