Plan:
South Shore's first ICO trip of the year is also the first day of Fall. We're kicking off the school year with a hike up Rattlesnake Ledge, an ICO perennial favorite. An easy hike off I-90 near North Bend with the payoff of terrific views of the Issaquah Alps, Seattle, and the Puget Sound from the top. Report:
Rattlesnake Ledge is a classic trail close to Seattle and a good introduction to hiking. It’s a moderately challenging hike appropriate for most kids and rewards those who reach the summit with sweeping views of the Issaquah Alps, Seattle, and the Puget Sound. For all those reasons it is a popular hike with ICO teams.

On the Wednesday before the hike the forecast was still predicting that Saturday would be sunny and the temperature would be in the 70s. We were all excited about what sounded like perfect weather for a hike. However, as often happens in the Northwest, the weather swiftly deteriorated and Saturday morning we were facing a steady drizzle that did not let up until after the hike was over and we were driving over the I-90 bridge on the way back to Seattle. At least it was a warm rain and most people were hiking it in t-shirts.

The Rattlesnake Ledge trail is very well maintained and there is good signage. A couple of kids struggled a bit with the hike, but everyone made it to the top. In spite of the “liquid sunshine”, the South Shore 4th and 5th graders had a good time. There was no view at the summit, the peak was wrapped in clouds, but the teacher who accompanied us on the trip reported that the kids were still talking enthusiastically about the hike the next week during school.

Looking up at Rattlesnake Ledge from the shore of Rattlesnake Lake. It was a wet and foggy day and that was the best view we would have of the summit.

Hiking up the trail, it was mid-morning but so overcast that there was not enough light to get a photo of the kids hiking without it being blurry.
