Plan:
In the morning we will drive to the Forest Service Ranger's office at Snoqualmie Pass for a 1 mile snowshoe hike led by a Ranger/Naturalist. After lunch we will go to the Hyak sledding hill for a couple hours of sledding.
Report:
We got lucky had sunny weather for our inaugural trip with South Shore school. We took a mixed group of 5th and 7th graders on a morning snowshoe hike to the Gold Creek pond from Gold Creek Sno-Park. It’s a short hike and a good first hike for kids who have never used snow shoes before (and once they get there the views at the pond are great). Not that we really needed snow shoes, it had been at least a week since the Pass had any snow, so the snow on the ground was very firm and by the time we got to the pond at least half the kids were carrying their snowshoes. After lunch we went to Hyak (just the other side of I-90 from Gold Creek) for a couple hours of fun sledding.
Suggestions:
Our original plan was to go on a hike led by a ranger/naturalist, but turns out that the program does not start until January. Still, it sounds good and if you are taking a group snowshoeing at the Pass between January and March you should consider the guided hike: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2013893365_snowshoe10m.html
